Social media shouldn’t be bringing about the end of democracy
I bought this domain last year on a bit of a lark. Just was feeling like I was spending too much time scrolling online.. Too much life. So I was thinking of taking a break, a Social Media Fast – I looked around online and found a few articles about this but no real resource or centralized resource to offer guidance or support in this endeavour. I knew there had to be more people like me, I have had a few people in my own friends circle pull the plug and move on. I didn’t do the fast, but I did delete Facebook and messenger from my phone, also deleted the shortcut from the shortcut bar on my browser, so If i want to use facebook, I have to type in the URL… not a huge obstacle, but at least enough to make me more mindful and intentional in my social media consumption.
Fast forward 8 months or so and Facebook is deteriorating, from the top down. apart from negative effects I was feeling in my life… Facebook’s very leadership at the very top seems willing to sacrifice truth and democracy to further bolster their share price and line their pockets. They learned their algorithm was fomenting dissent and anger and hatred and extremism but because that feature was making it more addictive, and capturing users to spend more time on the platform they shelved the recommendations aimed at alleviating this effect and continued on.
This is one of the many reasons I restarted this little project. I plan to offer tips and resources for taking a break from Facebook, articles and links to articles highlighting the behaviour of this multibillion dollar corporation.
